PETITION: No legal aid to convicted criminals
Proposed by: David Everitt
Addressed to: Justice Minister
Those found guilty of criminal activity should not receive legal aid to fight the conviction or deportation, especially where they have assets that can be financially redeemed.
It should be remembered that legal aid is taxpayers' money, yours and mine, and was originally set up to assist those of limited means to obtain justice in our system.
Some recent cases have revealed that those convicted had assets in the form of bank accounts, businesses, homes etc. The system was not set up to cater for them.
We, the undersigned, call for an end to legal aid to convicted criminals.
