President Erdogan of Turkey has unleashed an illegal migrant invasion onto the Greece-Turkey border, and is actively encouraging them to break through border fences or cross the sea between the two countries.
This is an attempt to extort billions of euros from the European Union as a form of 'Dane-geld', and so far the strategy seems to be paying off for President Erdogan, as despite an initial refusal to give in to his demands, the EU has now approved a payment of 1.25 billion euros in the last few days alone.
The Greek armed forces have been mobilised to protect the country's borders, but with over 200 kilometres of land border to patrol, and over 13,000 kilometres of coastline, their resources are stretched to the limit.
Given that this amounts to an act of war on an EU member state by a belligerent dictator, we should support Greece against this illegal migrant invasion - even though this is a time of national crisis for us with the Coronavirus pandemic.
We demand that the Foreign Secretary supports Greece with a robust and proportionate response, in both diplomatic and material terms in order to assist in repelling this migrant invasion - and not only because what threatens Greece today threatens the UK tenfold tomorrow.
As Rudyard Kipling said in his memorable poem - 'once you start paying the Dane-geld, you never get rid of the Dane'.
