Baroness Doreen Lawrence recently declared in a Channel 4 interview that the firefighters attending the Grenfell Tower inferno in 2017 were 'racist', and her bigoted comments have sparked outrage around the country.

She said: 'I think had that been a block full of white people in there they'd have done everything to get them out as fast as possible and make sure they did what they needed to do.'

This is a disgraceful slur on the brave men and women of our emergency services, and it would have been bad enough if those words had come from an ordinary member of the public.

Coming as they did from a peer of the Realm, such words are nothing less than outrageous and unacceptable.

Following the tsunami of public outrage, she offered only a mealy-mouthed and insincere token apology, with no indication that she recognised the strength of public feeling on the matter. 

Such bigotry has no place in the House of Lords, and we demand that Baroness Lawrence is stripped of her title forthwith.

BARONESS EVANS OF BOWES PARK:</p> <p>Dear Baroness Evans,</p> <p>It has been reported that Baroness Doreen Lawrence cast a disgraceful slur on the brave men and women of our firefighting service, following the tragedy of the Grenfell House fire in 2017.</p> <p>Speaking on a Channel 4 interview, she said: 'I think had that been a block full of white people in there they'd have done everything to get them out as fast as possible and make sure they did what they needed to do.'</p> <p>Such comments would have been bad enough had they come from an ordinary member of the public, but coming from a peer of the Realm those words were not only disgraceful, but outrageous, vile and frankly unacceptable.</p> <p>The token apology subsequently offered by Baroness Lawrence was mealy-mouthed and insincere, and in my opinion, did not go anywhere near far enough to meet the necessary standard for the full apology required.</p> <p>Such bigotry has no place in the House of Lords, and I therefore demand that Baroness Lawrence be stripped of her title forthwith.</p> <p>I look forward to hearing from you at the earliest opportunity.</p><p id="sign_off" class="mceNonEditable">
